In an unprecedented step that contradicts international law, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is currently in occupied Jerusalem, announced that he would visit the occupied Syrian Golan today, Thursday.
Pompeo said during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, today, Thursday, that US President Donald Trump’s decision in 2019 to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan “is of historical importance” and is nothing but a “recognition of reality.”
The US Secretary of State also touched upon Trump’s decision to transfer the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, describing it as “a simple step that some have warned will lead to war, but it has resulted in peace.”
Pompeo expressed his conviction that other Arab countries will follow the example of the UAE, Bahrain and Sudan in normalizing relations with Israel, saying, “It is time for the countries of the region to consider Israel as a partner, and these moves towards achieving peace will continue.”
In his speech, he also announced Washington’s intention to classify the BDS movement and any party that supports it as an anti-Semitic organization, describing that movement as a “cancer”, and stressed that the time is right for this measure.
The minister pledged to take punitive steps against any organization calling for a boycott of the Jewish state, adding that the Trump administration over the past four years has proven its support for “Israel” more than any previous US administration.
Pompeo indicated that he discussed with Netanyahu this morning “how to protect our citizens in the region from Iran,” saying that the Islamic Republic remains “the largest financier and supporter of terrorism in the world.”
